Uganda is one of the great East African countries that include Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burindi. Uganda popularly referred to as “The pearl of Africa” is gifted with many tourist attractions and yet many people wonder why Uganda is not a top notch tourist destination in East Africa. Some of the attractions that make Uganda a serious contender are the rare and endangered mountain gorillas of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Natonal Park, The Victoria falls on river Nile which has been categorized as the most powerful waterfalls on planet earth. River Nile which is the longest river on earth for white water rafting and other marine activities, Uganda has the mighty lake Victoria which is the largest flesh water lake in Africa and the Rwenzoris that are the widest mountain ranges in Africa as well. The above coupled with 10 national parks with great wildlife species and the hospitality of Ugandans should make Uganda one of the best destinations in Africa. In this article, we will explore reasons why Uganda is not a top notch tourism destination in East Africa yet it has all that it takes to become one.

Political history is one of the reasons why Uganda is not a top notch tourism destination in East Africa

In the early 1950’s Uganda was one of the top East African tourist destinations but the political instabilities that later followed just after independence crippled the tourism industry. The situation came out of hand when Iddi Amin became president in 1972. Many tourists were now looked at as spies, popular hotels were turned into residents of soldiers, some animals in national parks were poached to extinction. Notable example include the white rhino in Kidepo National Park. There was general insecurity and infrastructural breakdown in Uganda while other countries like Kenya and Tanzania were progressing. There followed Obote 2 regime that was also characterized by political instability. From 1986 however, the country has enjoyed relative political stability but to many who still read our form history, still think that Uganda is not safe for them and yet Uganda is a very safe country. Our political history serves as one of the reasons why Uganda is not a top notch tourist destination in East Africa.

Lack of enough financial support from government

Lack of enough final support from government explains why Uganda is not a top notch tourist destination in East Africa. Uganda needs a strong public relations and marketing campaign to show case all the major tourist attractions so as to attract tourists to visit this beautiful and gifted country. A strong public relations and marketing campaign would clear the poor image exerted on us by political instabilities of the 1980’s. Its true that since 1086, there has been some positive measures including the first tourism master plan, increasing on tourism budget, introduction of an independent tourism ministry and of course ensuring that Uganda enjoys relative political stability for the last 30 years.

Volatile neighbors is why Uganda is not a top notch tourism destination

One of the reasons why Uganda is not a top notch tourist destination in East Africa is that it is bordered by some countries whose political positions are questionable. Uganda is bordered by the Democratic Republic of Congo and southern Sudan. With this in mind, tourists fear to come to Uganda thinking that such instabilities will spill to Uganda during their visit which is not the case. There other reasons why Uganda is not a top notch tourist destination and these include some terror threats issued occasionally, disease out breaks but the good news is that the government has been on top of all these mentioned issues and the future for Uganda tourism is very bright
