Uganda is one of the few east African countries that has been spearheading tourism product development basing on the existing potential tourist attractions. Its only in Uganda where one can participate in gorilla and chimp habituation experiences. Other countries only offer gorilla and chimp trekking safaris. In this article we will be comparing gorilla and chimp habituation experience so that we see the differences between the two.
Things to consider while Comparing gorilla and chimp habituation experiences
Chimp habituation experience takes place in Kibale National Park while gorilla habituation experience is in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Rushaga. While comparing gorilla and chimp habituation experiences, one has to know that if interested in either experience, he/she needs to know where to go. For those interested in gorilla habituation safaris should be prepared to travel or fly to southwestern Uganda while those for chimp habituation safaris should be able to drive to western Uganda where Kibale National Park is located.
While comparing gorilla and chimp habituation experiences, one needs to consider the minimum numbers. The minimum number for gorilla habituation experience is 4 people while minimum number for chimpanzee habituation is 6 and there has been a proposal to increase this to 8 people per day but this is not yet approved.
When one goes for chimpanzee habituation, he or she will spend a whole day with researchers in the forest but gorilla habituation experiences are limited to only four hours meaning that while chimp trekking permits are not expensive, you spend more time with chimps compared to gorilla habituation.
The cost of permits should be put into consideration while comparing gorilla and chimp habituation experiences. Currently chimp habituation permits for Kibale National Park cost USD220 and allows one to spend a whole day with chimpanzees under habituation. Gorilla habituation permits cost USD1500 and allows one to spend 4 hours with mountain gorillas under habituation in the southern part of Bwindi National park.
The other difference between gorilla and chimpanzee habituation is that the experience is totally different in that gorilla and chimpanzees behave differently. Mountain gorillas stay in families while chimpanzees stay in communities and thus gorilla habituation experience is more organized compared to chimpanzee habituation experience in Uganda.
