Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is now offering two exciting products of gorilla trekking and habituation experience. This article is meant to compare gorilla trekking and habituation experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It should be noted that gorilla trekking in Uganda started way back in 1993 in the northern part of the park and Mubare gorilla group was the first gorilla family to be visited or trekked by tourists. Gorilla habituation experience is a new product launched in 2015 and can only be done in the southern part of Bwindi in a region known as Ruhaga.
Compare gorilla trekking and habituation experience in terms of price.
As usual a gorilla permit that allows you to trek gorillas costs $600.00 in high season and $350.00 in low season. There is a proposal of increasing low season gorilla permits to $450.00 in 2016. A gorilla permit allows the holder to spend one hour with habituated mountain gorillas once found. Included in a gorilla permit is park entrance fee, a guide/ranger who will be with you in the forest and of course staying with gorillas for one hour. For mountain gorilla habituation experience, the price has not been fully established but it is in the range of $1500-2000 per person and inclusions are same as for gorilla trekking except that you will spend time with researchers whose work is to habituate wild mountain gorillas.
Compare gorilla trekking and habituation in terms of time spent.
As earlier noted, you only spend one hour with a given habituated gorilla family much as finding the gorillas might take from 30 minutes to three quarters’ of the day. Gorilla habituation experience gives you from four hours to whole day experience with semi habituated mountain gorillas in Bwindi. So you get to spend more time with gorillas if you book gorilla habituation experience than gorilla trekking.
Gorilla trekking takes place in all regions of Bwindi Impenetrable National park since all four regions of Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga and Nkuringo have habituated mountain gorilla families. On the other hand, gorilla habituation experience only takes place in Rushaga region where two gorilla families are under habituation. The other difference is that at the moment, gorilla habituation experience is booked on ground while gorilla trekking permits are booked at UWA head office in Kampala.
