Can I choose a gorilla family of my choiceThere several habituated mountain gorilla families in Uganda and Rwanda and the focus of today’s discussion will be: Can I choose a gorilla family of my choice. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has about eleven mountain gorilla families located in four trail head in respective North, south and eastern regions. In the south with Nkuringo gorilla family in Nkuringo region, In Rushaga region, we have Mishaya, Nshongi, Kahungye, Busingye, and Bweza. When it comes to the Northern region of Buhoma, three habituated gorilla families of Mubare, Habinyanja and Rushegura do exist. In the eastern part of Ruhija, we also have three habituated mountain gorilla families of Bitukura, Oruzongo and Kahungye gorilla groups

Can I choose a gorilla family of my choice?

Uganda wildlife Authority and all park headquarters of Bwindi use a standard procedure to allocated tourists to respective habituated mountain gorilla groups. It is true that you can choose which gorilla family you can trek but the final decision rests with park administrators. This allocation is made every morning before briefing where they group tourists are grouped according to their interests, physical fitness and other associated factors. If you have a particular gorilla family you are interested in, then you can mention this to UWA representatives on that day and they will try within their own means to have you trek it

What used to happen before?

Before Uganda Wildlife Authority started selling gorilla permits by regions for example (Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga and Ruhija) tourists and tour operators used to buy gorilla permits per gorilla families in Bwindi. For example, one tour operator could as for gorilla permits to trek Rushegura or Bitukura and they could then allocate you such permits in advance. Then there, you would be assured that you could trek a gorilla family of your choice but this had problems associated with it. You could for example book a gorilla family which by the time of trekking, it had moved far away and yet your client is not physically fit to trek such gorilla family. Having experienced such problems, Uganda wildlife Authority then decided to change gorilla family allocation to regions such that all that are interested in gorilla tracking, choose a given region and allocation of gorilla families takes place in the morning of every tracking day to ensure that each client at least is allocated to a gorilla family that is with in his /her interests
