Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a vast tropical rain forest and home to over 400 mountain gorillas. Several gorilla families have been habituated for gorilla trekking. Due to the fact that this forest is huge, it has been divided into four gorilla regions of Ruhija, Buhoma, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Each region has its own advantage and disadvantages and in today’s issue, we will try to compare and find out the best region for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Our comparison will be based on accessibility, gorilla families and composition, lodges in the region among others. Discussing the best region for gorilla tracking is not as simple as it looks but we will try to elaborate on the basics to enable you make better decisions. Our argument remains that whichever region you choose gorilla trekking experience is the same as same procedures are followed.

Looking at the best region for gorilla trekking in Bwindi

In terms of accessibility by road, the best region for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park would be Ruhija in the Eastern Part of Bwindi. The road from Entebbe to Kabale is in tarmacked and in good conditions hence the drive time is less compared to Rushaga, Nkuringo and Buhoma. The only problem with Ruhija compared to other regions, it does not have an a nearby airstrip for those that would like to fly to and from Bwindi Impenetrable national Park. For those that would like to fly in to Bwindi, the best regions for this are Buhoma due to Kihihi Airstrip and then Rushaga and Nkuringo. Buhoma is the best region for gorilla trekking in Bwindi when it comes to fly in safaris. This is because, one has a choice to fly either in the morning or afternoon. For Nkuringo and Rushaga, flights only operate in the morning due to winds and weather conditions in the south of Bwindi National Park. Thus in terms of accessibility and drive time, Ruhija is closer, followed by Buhoma and then Rushaga and Nkuringo in Kisoro.

In terms of Lodges, Buhoma can be regarded as the best region for gorilla trekking in Bwindi followed by Nkuringo side. Buhoma has three popular lodges of Gorilla Forest Camp, Buhoma Lodge and Mahogany Springs which offer great service but have also been wildly marketed. There is also Buhoma Community rest camp for budget travellers. In Nkuringo, there is clouds mountain gorilla lodge and Nkuringo Gorilla Camp which are always preferred by tourists. Other regions have lodges as well to enable every traveller to make a choice.

In terms of gorilla families, Rushaga is the best region for gorilla trekking in Bwindi due to the fact that it has more gorilla families and permits compared to other regions. Rushaga has Nshongi, Mishaya, Kahungye, Busingye and Bweza while two other gorilla families are under habituated. This is followed by Buhoma and Ruhija that have three habituated gorilla families each. This therefore means that Rushaga has more gorilla permits available daily compared to other regions.

Generally, Buhoma is regarded as the best region for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park due to the fact that its where gorilla trekking started in 1993 when Mubare gorilla family was opened to tourists. As time went on, new trail heads and regions were opened up and they all match buhoma region when it comes to accommodation options, other activities like batwa experience, forest and community walks among others.
